Description

For many years, the Czech lands are shaken by military conflict, while Europe literally trembles before the Hussite “warriors of God.” Military life becomes a daily occupation for many inhabitants of the region: endless marches by field armies, columns of wagons later famed as the invincible wagon fort, and banners bearing the symbols of the chalice and the Czech lion. The authors, who are themselves actively involved in reconstructing fifteenth-century military life, offer a fresh, modern view of medieval warfare and the everyday lives of Hussite fighters. Six-hundred-year-old events come alive in a different way from traditional historical works. The book explores the organization of fighting units, their weapons and equipment, life on campaign, clothing, methods of combat, tactics and, naturally, the key battles of the Hussite era. The soldier’s perspective is always set within the broader historical context. The result is an engaging, modern book at the intersection of military history and living history. Hussite warriors appear in a new light, not merely as people armed with flails, but as a well-organized and equipped army representing not only the nobility but also the growing and self-confident urban class. Alongside period illustrations, the book contains original colour drawings of fifteenth-century warriors created on the basis of medieval sources, together with contemporary photographs from historical reenactments. The contents are in Czech.
