Description
Pediatric neurology encompasses a wide range of diagnoses caused by diseases of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and muscles. Pediatric neurologists most commonly address epilepsy, headaches, cerebral palsy, inflammatory brain diseases, neuromuscular disorders, and more. However, how can neurological diagnoses originating in the CNS be separated from psychiatric disorders? The processes occurring in neural networks are very complex, and individual neurological and psychiatric manifestations form a kind of continuum, intertwining and often combining very intensely. Psychiatric manifestations in neurological diseases may have their specifics, and sometimes a strict division between neurology and psychiatry is not possible. Our understanding of the complexity of neural networks is becoming deeper, and the two fields are increasingly merging. Just as neuropsychiatry was once established as a separate field (up until the 1950s), it may experience a renaissance, and interdisciplinary care, which is already crucial in pediatric neurology, will gain even more importance.
