Oral medicine is a prototype of an interdisciplinary medical (dental) specialty. Physicians from virtually all specialties may encounter patients with oral mucosal diseases of various etiologies and severities. In the Czech Republic, there is an undeniable shortage of specialists dealing with oral medicine, and many patients with oral mucosal diseases seek doctors from various specialties. The increasing number of patients needing qualified diagnostic and therapeutic management of mucosal diseases raises the demands on individual outpatient specialties. Oral lichen planus is among the most common diseases of the oral mucosa.
