Addictology is a multidisciplinary field of science that focuses on the prevention, treatment, and research of substance use and other forms of addictive behavior. The topic is not limited to traditional areas of alcohol abuse and illegal drugs, but necessarily includes tobacco and non-substance addictions, such as gambling or internet addiction disorders. Clinical addictology primarily focuses on issues that are key to direct work with patients or clients. It is about 'treatment' in a broader sense, aimed at addressing the impacts of addiction on individuals and society, as well as the social reintegration of those who suffer as a result of such behaviors. 'Addiction is a problem with many facets,' says Professor Wolfgang Götz, director of EMCDDA. It turns out that this problem cannot be grasped from a single perspective, a unified interpretive model, but requires multiple perspectives that compete, complement each other, and share common elements.
