Description
The old keeper of the reservoir, Jiří Smrček, corresponds with the general director of the watershed. These are reports on the state of the dam, but also about the state of his soul. It doesn't matter that the director does not respond to any of his 23 letters. Smrček, a former rural teacher, reveals things to himself that one wouldn't share with anyone. He is overwhelmed by the task that has caught him off guard: he has to find his successor among the residents of the village of Horní Znělá. Will it be Colonel Dekl, or someone else? Is it possible for this to be cheerful reading? I tried to make it so. Z. Svěrák adds to the new texts: "I have carried a notebook with me my whole life, where I jot down various short notes about what seems interesting to me, what I have seen, experienced, or what someone has told me. Recently, I told myself that I should look back at it and recall the events, possibly drawing inspiration from those notes. When I started reading through them, I found that almost 90% were unusable, and from the rest, this new book emerged."
