The publication provides a comprehensive view of the entire field – from the latest findings on the effects of ionizing radiation at the subcellular level to the consequences of damage at the tissue level and clinical outcomes (radiation sickness). It addresses the issues of irradiated or contaminated individuals, diagnostics, and specialized treatment in designated centers. Attention is also given to the possibilities of using radioprotective substances, including their side effects. Last but not least, the reader will become acquainted with the tasks of the integrated rescue system in the event of radiation threats and specific radiation accidents and disasters that have endangered humanity and the environment in the past.
