In this Czech-language book, the eminent Czech scholar of Czech literature Lubomír Doležel (1922–2017), who lived in Canada, introduces readers in detail to an important school of literary theory: the theory of fictional worlds in art, which he helped establish at the end of the 20th century. Unlike classical interpretation, the theory of fictional worlds views a literary work as open to countless levels of interpretation, allowing fiction and reality to interact continually. Heterocosmica: Fiction and Possible Worlds (2003) represents a significant linguistic contribution to postmodern literary theory. More than twenty years later, following the related books Heterocosmica II: Fictional Worlds of Postmodern Czech Prose (2014) and Heterocosmica III: Fictional Worlds of Protomodern Czech Prose (2018), it appears in a second edition.
