Description
This Czech-language study examines the denunciation campaign that the cultural weekly Tvorba launched against Jaroslav Seifert in 1950. The immediate impulse was the poet’s Píseň o Viktorce, although the literary arguments were driven primarily by political motives: party officials wanted to silence Seifert because of his opposition to the new regime. Writer and literary scholar Vratislav Maňák follows the case across the broad context of literary, media and political history, using it to describe the mechanisms of cultural life in which literary criticism was not a partner to poetry but an instrument of propaganda and censorship.
