This Czech-language book offers a cultural and historical examination of services and those who provide them. The first part traces the development of the concept of service in European history, from its biblical meaning to its embodiment in institutions such as the state and the market. The second part explores the structure of today’s service society. Through a description of the world of male and female servants from the beginning of modernity, the author explains why sociologists speak of the return of servants in recent decades. Drawing on extensive evidence, he argues that the future of services will depend primarily on the development of income and wealth inequalities. The difference is that while prosperous households in the 19th century were served by an influx of young women from the countryside, this role is now increasingly taken on by migrant women from poorer countries.
