Description
This English-language study analyzes the influence of populism on the development and transformation of political parties and party systems in seven European countries between 2000 and 2020: Hungary, Poland, Greece, Germany, Spain, Czechia and France. In individual case studies, an international team of authors examines whether the rise of populist parties during this period increased polarization, understood as the ideological distance between parties in each country, and whether this polarization led to changes in the type of party system. Populism can transform moderate party systems into polarized ones, while a high degree of polarization affects the functioning of the entire democratic regime. In extreme cases, the very democratic character of European political regimes may be threatened.
