Description

In August 1944, members of the Auschwitz Sonderkommando secretly managed to photograph the extermination process in which they themselves were imprisoned at its very heart. They left behind four photographs. In this Czech-language book, Georges Didi-Huberman describes the difficult circumstances through which the secret photographers had to pass, develops a phenomenology of the images, and seeks to understand their necessity, which remains as valid today as it was then. He examines the conditions under which visual sources can be used in the study of history, then concludes with a philosophical critique of the idea of the unimaginable, with which the Shoah is often associated. He thus seeks to define the extent to which the camp experience remains imaginable despite everything, and to deepen our understanding of the value of images in history.
