This Czech-language history book examines the Crusades of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, which are far more than carefree adventures undertaken by knights of the late Middle Ages. They reflect a crucial moment in the formation of premodern Europe, shaping relations between Christian and non-Christian states, the way “the others” are perceived, and the creation of a shared identity among the European nobility. The book traces the paths of knights who journeyed to the very frontiers of the Christian world and offers a comprehensive view of the individual battlefields of the late medieval crusades. Although the spirit of the Crusades in some form survived at least into the sixteenth century, Chollet’s account focuses on the period from the Mamluk conquest of Acre in 1291 to the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453.
