Description
The popularity and production of historical atlases in Europe grew especially from the mid-19th century onwards. Although these works appear to map the past impartially, they often strongly reflected the current political situation and changing social attitudes, making them valuable historical sources. This book examines historical atlases in Central Europe between 1848 and 1989, with particular emphasis on Czech and Czechoslovak works that have not previously been studied in detail. Its comprehensive analysis of atlas production, including contemporary responses to the works, their social significance and ideological misuse, establishes a basic typology and identifies production trends. It also reveals unexpected parallels and regional specifics, offering a new perspective on the development of historical cartography in Central Europe. The contents are in Czech.
