Description

Capital or cardinal sins, together with their contrasting virtues, form a foundation of the moral and political thought of Western civilization. With the rise of modern politics, however, noncanonical distortions of human nature increasingly emerge from their shadow. Judith Shklar borrows Montaigne’s term “ordinary vices” for these failings: cruelty, hypocrisy, snobbery, betrayal and misanthropy. They are not simply forms of evil, but reveal the ambiguity and difficulty of liberal morality, which is willing to accept the contradictions and threats arising from personal freedom. Ordinary vices are woven into the many ways rulers and subjects behave, and Shklar presents this variety with the help of authors including Montaigne, Montesquieu and Nietzsche, as well as Shakespeare, Dickens, Hawthorne and Jane Austen. Rather than a grand theory, these vices call for attention to seemingly minor details that reveal the genuine and often contradictory motivations of everyone involved in social life. The book is in Czech.
