Description
Contents are in French. Moving onto a houseboat, living with an aunt who is fond of proverbs, facing drowning, the mountains or the fear of possible heartbreak: the witty and ingenious servant Saturnin sets out to turn his young master’s far too peaceful life upside down. This is not always to the master’s delight, but it certainly pleases readers who have embraced this humorous novel since its publication. A bestseller in Czechoslovakia from its 1942 release, Saturnin showed that in a country under Nazi rule, one form of resistance could consist in banishing reality from the mind and creating a new world. Since then, enthusiasm for Saturnin has not waned: it was voted the Czechs’ favourite book, reissued 24 times in the original language, translated into English, German, Spanish, French, Italian and Russian, and adapted for radio, television, film and theatre.
