These are dangerous times for democracy. For decades, the gap between society’s winners and losers has widened, influencing politics and driving people apart. Overcoming the anger and hostility directed at political and cultural elites will require mainstream political parties, like their counterparts around the world, to reconsider their mission and purpose. They will need to recognize that the market-oriented meritocratic ethic they have promoted so strongly has encouraged resentment and ultimately provoked a sharp populist reaction. The hope of renewing our moral and civic life depends on understanding how social ties and mutual respect have gradually broken down over the past four decades. This book seeks to explain how that happened and considers how a path back to a politics of the common good might be found. The contents are in Czech.
