Description
Fire and Stars is a meditative philosophical book by Erazim Kohák, exploring questions such as how life, the world and our place in them relate to one another, how Good enters the world and how Evil can arise. Its origins go back to 1984, when Kohák published Embers and the Stars in American exile, where it attracted considerable attention and parts of it reached Czech readers in a samizdat translation. This Czech-language edition is not simply a translation of the original work, but rather a new adaptation enriched by the author’s personal experience over a further 32 years. It is somewhat less scientific, yet more filled with a search for wisdom and strong insights for attentive readers. The reflections are framed by life in nature, inspired by the glowing embers of a welcoming fire and reflected in a starry sky that can no longer be seen in cities because of light pollution. Nature is a place of profound openness to the world, life, love and understanding. As one of the most important representatives of ecological ethics, Kohák never moralizes or sees things in black and white; instead, he seeks mutual respect and balance between modern life and nature.
