Description

In this study of lyric poetry, Jonathan Culler approaches the field flexibly and without dogmatism, while recognising the rich internal connections within the traditions of poetic writing, listening and reading that emerge from the experience of authors and readers and establish the unity of the genre. Rather than concentrating on the hermeneutic question of a poem’s meaning, Culler emphasises what a poem does through language and what it achieves in its utterance. The discussion therefore focuses on such features as address, praise and blame, rhythm and ritual. Culler draws on theoretical ideas found, among others, in the work of G. W. F. Hegel, T. W. Adorno and the phenomenologically oriented Käte Hamburger, while consistently developing his arguments through concrete examples. The book is also intended to serve as an accessible introduction for students.
