Description

This book, whose contents are in Czech, examines how Primat, a monk at Saint-Denis, completed a history of the Kingdom of France in French around 1275. His Romance of the Kings became part of the Great Chronicles of France and served for a long time as a foundation of France’s national history. The book asks at whose prompting Primat created his work, whether it expresses his own ideas or merely conveys those of its commissioner, and to what extent a medieval compiler and translator can be considered an author and historian in the modern sense. It was intended to crown the lifelong research of Bernard Guenée (1927–2010) into medieval historiography and chronicle writing, but he died while preparing the manuscript for publication. After his death, his pupil Jean-Marie Moeglin took over the unfinished work and brought it to publication six years later.
