The second volume of Michal Tomášek’s work compares the contemporary legal systems of the Far East—China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia and Vietnam—with their foreign models. It shows how foreign legal concepts and institutions were adopted into the legal environments of the Far East and how they were applied over time. A comparison of contemporary judicial interpretations of received law in individual Far Eastern countries with interpretations of the same concepts and institutions in their countries of origin answers a range of questions, including the future direction of Far Eastern law. It also reveals the central theme of both volumes: the extent to which traditional legal thinking survives in the interpretation of new law, and whether it may even be developing at the expense of law adopted from abroad. Like the first volume, the book is intended not only for specialists but also for a wider readership. The discussion is supported by extensive visual material.
