Jean-Luc Nancy (born in 1940) ranks among the most important contemporary French philosophers. First published in the 1980s, this major work seeks to name and defend the original meaning of a concept that modern society has reduced to a bond between independent individuals. In the title essay, Nancy develops his ideas in a polemic with Georges Bataille and Martin Heidegger; other texts explore, among other subjects, the constitutive significance of myth and the nature of history. For Nancy, society is not a social, economic or political concept. Instead, he considers the shared nature of being, as though existence were inseparable from its participation in this “being-with.” In the finest tradition of twentieth-century French philosophy, Nancy works at the very limits of what postmodern thought can formulate.
