Description
This Czech-language history presents an expanded and updated edition of the third volume of The History of the Cistercian Order in Bohemia, covering monasteries on the borders and beyond the borders of Bohemia. It incorporates further research into historical sources and new findings from Czech and international scholarship. The first section examines the histories of Marienthal in Saxony and Žďár nad Sázavou in Moravia, monasteries that belonged to the Kingdom of Bohemia in the Middle Ages but now lie outside Bohemia. The central section explores contacts between Czech abbeys and Cistercian monasteries in neighbouring countries, including their ties to mother houses in present-day Germany and Austria, and discusses the burials of Czech princesses and other members of ruling families in Cistercian monasteries. The final four chapters introduce Waldsassen, Altzelle, Grünhain and Zwettl, German and Austrian religious houses that held estates in Bohemia during the Middle Ages, with a focus on their links to the Czech lands. The text is accompanied by 107 photographs and 23 maps and diagrams, including numerous new images and maps, and appears in a new graphic design.
