This Czech-language, extensive monograph by Professor Jaroslav Mihule presents a unique body of information on his lifelong subject of expertise: the life and work of Bohuslav Martinů. Mihule examines Bohuslav Martinů’s music in the light of contemporary domestic and international criticism and engagingly captures the distinctive features of the composer’s individual works. For the first time, the book openly describes the post-February regime’s attitude towards the composer and the damaging role of Zdeněk Nejedlý in his fate, while portraying Bohuslav Martinů as a loyal supporter of Masaryk’s democracy. Particular attention is paid to the development of European music during the first half of the 20th century, with a necessary emphasis on the composer’s work, especially the music he created during his American exile.
