Étienne Balibar (born 1942), a student of Louis Althusser, is one of today’s most significant political thinkers. His book Spinoza and Politics, first published in 1985, provides a clear introduction to the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza through the problems of Spinoza’s political thought. Balibar examines three major works, the Theological-Political Treatise, the Political Treatise and Ethics, discussing key themes including Spinoza’s defence of freedom of thought and democratic government, his theory of the state and law, and his political anthropology. He places Spinoza’s writings in their historical context and explores how Spinoza engaged with the political disputes of his time. The book’s central theme is the relationship between philosophy and politics. Balibar not only interprets Spinoza’s thought but also considers the philosopher’s political role, using Spinoza’s example to demonstrate the inseparability of philosophical and political questions.
