Description

This textbook is intended for students of the eponymous course accredited by the Czech Ministry of Health. Successfully completing the course enables students of single-subject psychology programmes to complete the process of obtaining professional qualifications for work as psychologists in healthcare, which can be acquired through an accredited single-subject master’s degree in psychology. Written by a ten-member team of doctors and psychologists, the publication summarises approaches to defining and understanding health and its determinants, the organisation and management of healthcare, and the role and importance of health policy. It presents the main trends in the health status of the Czech population, including international comparisons. Another section outlines the principles, procedures and practical recommendations for providing first aid and healthcare in extraordinary and crisis situations, and addresses requirements concerning the content and management of medical records. The book also provides an overview of the main legal regulations relevant to healthcare. A substantial section introduces the fundamentals of pharmacology, explaining the effects of medicinal substances and products on the human organism, including drug interactions, drug classification and possible adverse effects. It examines psychological approaches to influencing health, the foundations and main concepts of health-related behaviour change, the principles of health promotion and protection, and evidence-based procedures. Attention is also paid to the ethical issues of psychological work in healthcare, the origins and development of ethical thinking in psychology, and major ethical codes, including the Code of Ethics of the Czech-Moravian Psychological Society and the Meta-Code of Ethics for Psychologists of the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations. The final section focuses on the conditions, course and outcomes of healthcare practice, which forms part of the course.
