Description
The apparent contradictions in the title are not merely intended to attract the attention of readers. Much of the book is connected by the understanding that many things in the Middle Ages were different from what they might seem at first sight. The message of a medieval image consisted of several layers, some of which took precedence over aesthetic experience. The Middle Ages already knew, for example, comic-strip speech bubbles in the form of so-called speaking scrolls. Other inscriptions could not be read without the help of an expert. What purpose did they serve? The spread of printing gradually brought a transition from the magical world of sound to the neutral world of visual perception. How did this process affect the way works of art were perceived? Alongside other questions, the second part discusses staged devotions in Český Krumlov and wild men of the Luxembourg era. The third part presents brief studies, something like sparks of scholarly inquiry, which add an unusual dimension to the historian’s existence. Its contents are in Czech.
