Description
The monograph presents a comprehensive "biography" of one of the most interesting and significant sculptural-architectural works erected in Bohemia in connection with the plague epidemic of 1713-1715. The monument, built in an area that at the time functioned as the cour d’honneur of Prague Castle, is exceptional for its ideological program as well as its artistic quality. This is reflected in both the unconventional concept of the architectural layout of the column and the compositional and modeling solution of its sculptural decoration, the author of which is Ferdinand Maxmilián Brokoff. The scholarly monograph offers a detailed look at the transformation of the image of this Baroque monument in scholarly literature and also provides a thorough overview of the predecessors of the Hradčany monument in Prague. The authors trace the history of the column's creation and analyze its architecture and sculptural decoration, following the fate of the work from its ceremonial consecration in 1736 to the present day, focusing on the transformations of the column.
