This Czech-language classic by American anthropologist Thomas W. Laqueur of the University of California, Berkeley, is as significant to the history of sexuality and gender as Michel Foucault’s History of Sexuality. The original English title, Making Sex, refers through wordplay to the historical and cultural formation of sexuality itself, supposedly the biological foundation of differences between men and women. Laqueur establishes the categories of the one-sex and two-sex models: in the two-sex model, male and female genitals are fundamentally different organs, while in the one-sex model, the female reproductive organs are an inwardly turned and less “hot,” or energy-filled, version of the penis and testicles. He offers extensive analyses of ancient, Renaissance and post-Enlightenment authors, both male and female, from philosophy, medicine, political agitation, essay writing and poetry, and invites us to reconsider everything we have regarded as natural and simply given in the field of sexuality.
