Description
This Czech-language book examines how not only individuals but also entire cultures preserve memories and create their own forms of memory, thereby establishing their identity and legitimacy and affirming their aims. Aleida Assmannová considers the various functions of cultural remembrance and the means through which it operates, including writings, images and monuments, together with their historical and technological transformations. She also explores how societies deal with an ever-growing body of knowledge, in which politics and science are important, but art is gaining an increasingly significant role.
