Description
The book discusses the long-neglected and overlooked German mathematical community in Prague, which was among the European elite in the first third of the 20th century. It analyzes the development of mathematics education at the German University in Prague from its founding in 1882 until its tragic demise in 1945. Based on the study of archival sources, original scholarly works, memoirs of involved personalities, and secondary literature, it clarifies the complicated position of the Prague German mathematical community in the Czech lands. It captures its specifics arising from the Prague 'genius loci', indicates its connections with the surrounding German world, shows its relationships with both domestic and foreign professional societies, and above all evaluates the scientific contributions of individual Prague German mathematicians to the development of world science.
