Description
This monograph examines a remarkable collection of Gothic altarpieces and individual panel paintings preserved in northwestern Bohemia and dating from 1340 to 1550. Most come from the Late Gothic and early modern periods, when Bohemia was ruled by the Jagiellonian dynasty and Ferdinand I of Habsburg. The wealth of these works reflects the economic growth of northwestern Bohemia, above all the mining and processing of metals in the Ore Mountains. Author Jan Royt, together with historian Michaela Hrubá and art historian Magdaléna Nespěšná Hamsíková, presents the development of panel painting in northwestern Bohemia and Saxony within the historical and religious context of the region. Individual works are introduced in detail through catalogue entries accompanied by colour reproductions. The contents are in Czech.
