Description
This publication presents one of the most systematic attempts to establish a theoretical foundation for computer technology and its impact on contemporary culture. Lev Manovich places new media in the broader context of the history of technologies and cultural forms, analysing their basic principles, operations and forms while also questioning certain simplifications, such as the myth of interactivity and the polarization of digital and analogue media. From today’s perspective, some of the theses may seem outdated, yet the book remains both an attempt to theorize what new media really are and a record of the turn of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, which marks a fundamental watershed in the forms of our media and culture.
