Henrik Ibsen - Člověk a maska – de Figueiredo Ivo (2015)

The book by Norwegian historian Ivo de Figueiredo is the latest biography of the life and work of the world-renowned playwright and poet Henrik Ibsen. The publication challenges established myths and claims regarding Ibsen's life, which have become accepted as undeniable truths over the years. Henrik Ibsen is primarily known to Czech readers as the so-called founder of realistic drama; however, this monograph looks at Ibsen's dramatic and poetic work and his life in a broader European context – the author proceeds chronologically, focusing on the kind of poet Ibsen aspired to be, the poetic program he originated from, and the kind of poet he ultimately became, what conditions shaped his work, but above all, how he was understood as a poet and what reception his work received. The Czech translation fills a gap that has long been evident to experts. The book "Henrik Ibsen: Man and Mask" provides readers from among experts, theater studies students, and the general public with a readable and high-quality treatment of biographical information about the life of the playwright, whose works are performed on Czech stages with unrelenting intensity.
