Description

New religious movements are movements of protest. They often arise from dissatisfaction with the prevailing social code, and their emergence is usually inspired by a charismatic leader. They may also express dissent against the existing ideology of established religions. Currently, there are thousands of them around the world. A large portion of them soon disappears as they fail to find enough followers. It primarily depends on the majority society how long it takes for a new religious group to cease being 'new' and start being perceived as 'established.' This publication addresses the violent conflicts that arise between new religious movements and the surrounding society. Understanding the laws governing the birth of these movements, their development, internal dynamics, and interaction with the environment is facilitated by twenty-four examples presented in the book. These provide a comprehensive picture of the various ways in which members of new religious movements suffer from violence and how they perpetrate it. Understanding these laws is significant not only for the study of religion but also offers readers from the broader public a deeper insight into the functioning of new religions and the majority society.
