This Czech-language grammar is a concise, accessible description of the contemporary Czech language, created by authors working at various institutes of Charles University after nearly fifteen years. The first of two volumes covers the sound system, vocabulary, word formation, morphology, stylistics and writing system, while the second volume is to focus on sentence structure. It is the first description of its kind to systematically capture the differences between spoken and written Czech, drawing on extensive data from the Czech National Corpus. Rather than showing how the language ought to look, it presents how people actually speak and write, allowing readers to judge which forms are usual and appropriate in particular situations and which are unusual or less preferred in a given context. This second edition contains only minimal textual changes, mainly corrections to individual formulations, alongside a redesigned graphic presentation.
