Description
First published in 1969, this philosophical work by Gilles Deleuze is one of his major books from the period before his collaboration with Felix Guattari. It is a collection of 34 series of paradoxes, followed by an appendix containing five previously published and revised essays that develop points only briefly indicated in the preceding series. Its central theme is a philosophy of becoming, which Deleuze, following Henri Bergson and A. N. Whitehead, sets against the dominant philosophy of being. Within this new framework, he transforms the classical concepts of event, meaning, and idea, seeking to show that only a different understanding of the relationship between difference and repetition can open the way to a new image of thought. This thought draws its necessity not from the evidence of first principles, but from the experience of encountering problematic situations through which the world reveals itself to us.
