Description

This second edition presents a continuous account of the history of the Czech Lands from prehistoric times to the Czech Republic’s accession to the European Union in 2004. It traces the development of the Czech state and nation, as well as the minorities living in the Czech lands, particularly Jews, Germans, Slovaks and Poles. The central themes are changes in the state, including territories that belonged to it only temporarily, and in the society living within it, alongside developments in culture, religion, population and the transformation of the landscape over a thousand years. Prepared under the direction of leading Czech historians Jaroslav Pánek and Oldřich Tůma by specialists from the Institute of History and the Institute of Contemporary History of the Czech Academy of Sciences, this expanded edition includes 133 illustrations and photographs and 16 maps showing the territorial development of the Czech lands. A new chapter covers the events of 1993–2004. Foreign reviews of the first edition described it as the most comprehensive account of Czech history available in English.
