The book aims to examine the issue of fighting the bark beetle in Šumava from the perspective of nature conservation biology. It introduces readers to general questions of nature conservation with special regard to the specific character of the Šumava National Park. It provides a new precise definition of the altitude zonation of Šumava forests, which is crucial for understanding their function and appearance at different altitudes, as well as for differentiating the approach to their protection based on these designated zones. Separate chapters are dedicated to the life and population dynamics of the spruce bark beetle, its impact on Šumava ecosystems, and the choice of suitable forest management in areas affected by the bark beetle calamity.
