Description
This study is the first probe of its kind in our country that systematically examines the English translation equivalents of the three most frequently used Czech prepositions. Frequency dictionaries for Czech and English indicate that prepositions are among the most commonly used parts of speech in both languages. The translation of Czech prepositions into English is one of the most common sources of errors for Czech speakers in English. Thanks to a parallel corpus (the InterCorp project, ÚČNK FF UK), it has been possible to obtain information from a sufficiently large and representative sample about how the distribution of the prepositions v/ve, na, and s/se appears in Czech literary texts from a functional and semantic perspective, along with the corresponding distribution of English equivalents. The aim of the study is to partially fill the gap in the contrastive description of prepositions and thus enrich both the theoretical description of this part of speech and provide reliable data for the practical needs of applied linguistics, translation, and lexicography.
