Petr Wittlich, widely regarded as the foremost expert on Czech painting during the Art Nouveau period, presents an informed account of Czech art from the 1880s to 1918. He explores a period when painting, through three generational waves of Art Nouveau, broke free from the restrictive academicism of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and developed its own distinctive character. The book follows these major transformations along two lines: the institutional development of associations, journals, reforms of art schools, scholarship stays and exhibitions, with particular emphasis on Prague; and the formation of style, expression, recurring artistic motifs and responses to contemporary reality in the work of major painters who both fulfilled and extended the traditional concept of Art Nouveau. A final section contains biographical profiles of the artists.
