Description

This Czech-language monograph analyzes and interprets Tertullian's second-century work Apologeticum to trace changes in Christianity's self-understanding as it developed in dialogue with late antique Latin culture and the administrative structures of the Roman Empire. The concept of religio plays a key role in this process: from the second century onward, it enters the language of Christian theology and, in Tertullian's work, is applied to Christianity for the first time. Christianity is no longer presented primarily as a path, hodos, or as true philosophy, but becomes a religion, a category familiar and comprehensible within the Latin cultural sphere.
