Description
This Czech-language book is the first more extensive work on the Basque language published in the Czech Republic. It introduces Czech linguists to the nature of contemporary standard Basque, or euskara batua, its distinctive linguistic features, and the findings and current state of Basque and Spanish Basque studies. It discusses the historical sociolinguistic situation of Basque; research into the language’s origin, genealogical affiliation and development; Basque dialects with sample texts; and its typology. The core of the synchronic section describes Basque phonetics and phonology, together with selected aspects of its morphology, syntax and vocabulary, focusing on features that distinguish Basque from Indo-European languages. The contents are in Czech.
