Description

This study by Koreanists Miriam Löwensteinová and Vladimír Pucek presents, for the first time in such breadth, the main stages in the development of classical Korean literature from its origins to the beginning of the 20th century. Across 13 chapters, the authors trace the development of Korean prose from the founding myths of the ancient Korean kingdoms and historical stories in old chronicles to the classical Korean novel, or kodä sosol, of the 17th to 19th centuries. They also examine the development of poetry, especially the so-called songs of the homeland, hyangga, the classical three-line sijo form and the narrative poems known as kasa. The history of Korean writing is interpreted in connection with intellectual and religious movements, including shamanism, Buddhism and Confucianism, as well as the influence of the literatures of neighbouring countries, particularly China. The final chapter focuses on the so-called new prose, sin sosol, in the context of the Enlightenment and reform movements and the influence of Western ideas at the turn of the 20th century. These works already form a bridge to the emergence of modern Korean literature. The contents are in Czech.
