Description
A communist, adventurer, partisan, politician, journalist and writer, Jura Sosnar was a man of many faces who entered historical memory in connection with the investigation of the Krčmaň affair, an alleged attempt to assassinate three non-communist ministers of the Czechoslovak government in September 1947, when he was suspected of organizing it. This book is not a biography in the traditional sense. Through the attitudes, opinions and activities of a prominent regional figure and a relatively influential nationwide personality, it explores broader social trends, primarily during the period from 1938 to 1948. These were the years when a new model for the internal organization of the republic was being sought. The various ideas can, from a broad perspective, be grouped under the umbrella of “the search for an illiberal regime.” The transition from the political system of the First Republic to a new regime, the “new republic,” and reflection on this transformation with Sosnar as a guide are the book’s central research concerns.
