Description

The final novel by Walter Seidl (1905–1937), a native of Opava and one of the most talented authors of Prague German literature, is a fictionalised mosaic of a young intellectual’s life against the backdrop of Europe’s turbulent history after the First World War. The story follows Hermann Kessler from a traumatic childhood in a military cadet school through his studies in France to his return to Prague, where he encounters the cultural and political conflicts of the First Czechoslovak Republic. The novel combines an intimate drama of love, a reflection on modern music and a critical view of Czech-German relations. Here, Seidl leaves behind the irony of his early writings and finds a style close to Flaubert’s: subtle and analytical, with an emphasis on the psychology of the characters. The author’s tragic fate—he died at the age of 32—adds the mark of a prematurely silenced talent. Mountain of Lovers is not only a story of love and loss, but also a valuable testimony to cultural dialogue in interwar Europe.
