Description
This Czech-language monograph examines the deep connection between the philosophical and literary work of Jean-Paul Sartre, the leading representative of existentialism, focusing on how his ontological understanding of human existence is reflected in specific literary works. It innovatively analyzes Sartre’s novels Nausea and The Roads to Freedom, the novella The Words, the short story The Wall, and key plays including No Exit, The Respectful Prostitute, The Devil and the Good Lord, The Unburied Dead and The Flies, in which philosophical ideas become living narrative material. Particular attention is given to Sartre’s reflections on the function of literature in society and on the role of the intellectual as witness to social events, participant and moral voice of an era. The monograph also considers his criticism of bourgeois literature and his ideological shift towards Marxism. It offers a systematic account of Sartre’s thought and his cultural and political positions, intended for readers interested in philosophy, literature and the committed intellectual tradition of the 20th century.
