Description
This Czech-language book explores the mythology of ancient Rome, where stories were an integral part of society, from religion and politics to the founding of the city. Their legacy appears in everyday speech, 18th-century art displayed in the Louvre and the works of William Shakespeare. The Romans’ tendency to treat mythology as part of history creates uncertainty about the historical basis of the figures in these stories. The book examines mythology from Romulus and Remus and the founding of Rome to Lucretia and the Republican period, from Livy to Virgil’s Aeneid, and from Dis Pater in the underworld to Jupiter.
