Description
The plot of the historical detective novel takes place in August 1306, immediately after the Olomouc murder of the last Přemyslid king, Václav III. The unclear circumstances of the king's death, which royal judge Melichar of Roupov cannot resolve, put him in an unfavorable light before the new ruler, Jindřich of Carinthia, Václav's brother-in-law. Melichar prefers to leave Prague for his fortress in Roupov, where his life situation becomes even more complicated. In the vicinity of Roupov, the fortresses of neighboring nobles are being burned down, and moreover, the judge's wife suffers from a strange illness, and the local chaplain Zachariáš spreads rumors that she is possessed by the devil. Only her social status prevents him from attempting an exorcism...
