Description
After two centuries of systematic collecting, a publication is released that maps the agate wealth of the Czech lands. In addition to agate, it showcases the diversity of the entire group of other siliceous materials – jasper, chalcedony, carnelian, fossilized woods, quartz veins, and other lesser-known yet very aesthetic varieties. The main part of the book displays over 950 stones from 56 of the most important localities in Bohemia and Moravia on 172 plates. Typical finds, mostly obtained from private collections and largely unpublished, are supplemented with short texts characterizing individual localities. The book is introduced by an essay 'Painted Stones' by Václav Cílek, which comprehensively addresses the topic – from the formation of stones, through the history of their use, to their symbolic significance.
