Description
Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, the daughter of a British aristocrat, is passionate about chemistry and soon has the opportunity to apply her knowledge, especially of poisons, while investigating a crime. One day, the de Luces find a dead bird on their doorstep with a postage stamp in its beak, greatly upsetting Flavia’s father, a philatelist. Not long afterwards, Flavia discovers a dying man in the garden. Her father is accused of murder, and Flavia begins investigating on her own. The present crime appears to be connected to the terrifying death of one of her father’s teachers many years earlier. With intelligence, courage, irony and a surprisingly penetrating outlook, the young narrator leads readers into the world of the English countryside in the 1950s. This mystery recalls the classics of the English detective tradition and will appeal to lovers of suspenseful stories of all ages.
